The Deer Exercise

The Deer Exercise is one of the oldest continuously practiced Daoist internal alchemy techniques. Ancient Taoist sages observed deer in the wild — their vitality, their sexual potency, their longevity — and adapted their movements into a human practice. The deer exercises draw sexual energy upward through the seven glands to the pineal gland, creating a full-body tingling sensation similar to orgasm — a form of sexual transmutation that converts generative energy into spiritual and creative force.

There are distinct male and female versions, both involving heated hands applied to the genital area combined with anal sphincter contractions (the "deer lock") that shoot chi upward through the governing vessel. The practice serves three purposes: physical revitalization (hormonal balance, reproductive health), mental clarity (redirection of sexual preoccupation into creative focus), and spiritual development (awakening the pineal gland as the seat of higher consciousness).

Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson demonstrating Daoist Chi Kung — foundational energy cultivation principles including the deer exercise lineage.

The Male Deer Exercise

1. Warm the Hands

Rub the palms vigorously together until they are hot — 30-60 seconds. The heat activates the laogong points (P-8) in the center of each palm.

2. Cup and Circulate

With the heated right hand, cup the testicles. Place the left hand over the lower dantian (2 inches below the navel). Circle the right hand 81 times in one direction, then 81 times in the other. The heat and intention draw qi to the reproductive center.

3. The Deer Lock

Contract the anal sphincter and perineum as tightly as possible — as if stopping the flow of urine and holding back a bowel movement simultaneously. Hold as long as you can. This shoots chi up the spine through the governing vessel (du mai) toward the crown.

4. Gather at the Pineal

Visualize the energy rising through each gland: gonads → adrenals → pancreas → thymus → thyroid → pituitary → pineal. When it reaches the pineal, a tingling sensation spreads through the entire body. Rest here. Let the energy integrate.

5. The Female Deer Exercise

Women place heated hands over the breasts (not the genitals), circling 36 times outward then 36 times inward. The deer lock is performed similarly — contracting the vaginal muscles and perineum. Energy rises through the same glandular pathway. Particularly recommended for hormonal balance, fertility, and menstrual regulation.

Five Animal Frolics (Wu Qin Xi)

Attributed to the legendary physician Hua Tuo (c. 200 CE), the Five Animal Frolics are the earliest known Qigong form. Each animal embodies a different organ system and movement quality. The practice is both prevention and treatment — Hua Tuo taught that the body needs exercise like a door hinge needs movement to avoid rusting.

🐯

Tiger

Liver & Gallbladder. Strength, courage, lunging power. Claws extend, eyes blaze. The tiger teaches ferocity in service of life.

🦌

Deer

Kidneys & Bladder. Grace, longevity, sexual essence. The deer turns the head gently, stretches the spine, conserves jing.

🐻

Bear

Spleen & Stomach. Rootedness, digestion, heavy presence. The bear sways, sinks, grounds — turning food into life force.

🐵

Monkey

Heart & Small Intestine. Agility, playfulness, quickness. The monkey leaps, grabs, pivots — teaching the heart to stay light.

🐦

Crane

Lungs & Large Intestine. Elegance, balance, breath. The crane lifts one leg, spreads wings — embodying the space between breaths.

Jerry Alan Johnson's Daoist Magix Corpus

Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson is one of the few Western practitioners to be fully initiated into Daoist esoteric lineages and authorized to transmit them. His works span medical qigong, magical transformation, exorcism, weather magic, and internal alchemy. The corpus below represents the practical, operational side of Daoism — not philosophy but technique.

Daoist Magical Transformation Skills

Shape-shifting at the energetic level. Working with the five elements, talismanic seals, and the transformation of qi into specific forms and effects.

Magical Incantations, Hand Seals & Star Stepping

The triad of Daoist sorcery: spoken word (zhou), hand gestures (jue), and the Yu Bu star-walking pattern that maps the Big Dipper onto the ground.

Daoist Weather Magic & Feng Shui

Weather modification through qi manipulation. Feng shui not as decoration but as energetic architecture — the placement of forms to conduct and channel terrestrial and celestial qi.

Daoist Plant & Animal Magic

Working with the spiritual intelligences of the natural world. Plant spirit medicine, animal totem invocation, and the shamanic roots of Daoist practice.

Daoist Exorcism

The art of clearing parasitic entities, energetic attachments, and malevolent influences. Diagnostics, ritual protocols, and protective formations.

Chinese Medical Qigong Therapy

Multi-volume work covering energetic anatomy, prescription exercises, meditation protocols, and clinical applications — the foundation of medical qigong as a complete system.

Daoist Internal Alchemy

Neidan — the internal elixir. The Great Work of refining jing (essence) into qi (energy) into shen (spirit) into emptiness. The path of the immortal.

Taoist Nine Star Astrology

A Daoist astrological system based on the nine stars of the Big Dipper constellation. Used for destiny analysis, timing, and alignment with cosmic cycles.

The Immortality Tradition

Daoist alchemy has two branches: waidan (external elixir — literal chemistry, mineral compounds, herbal formulas) and neidan (internal elixir — the refinement of one's own energetic substance through meditation, breath, and movement). The Deer Exercise sits in the neidan tradition: a somatic practice that physically circulates and refines essence into spirit.

The classic text Taoist Yoga: Alchemy and Immortality by Lu K'uan Yu (Charles Luk) details the complete path from jing cultivation through the opening of the microcosmic orbit to the formation of the immortal spirit body. Key practices include:

The Microcosmic Orbit

Circulating qi through the governing vessel (up the spine) and conception vessel (down the front). The foundational circuit that all higher alchemy depends on. Opened through breathing, intention, and the deer lock.

Jing Preservation

Sexual essence is the fuel of alchemy. In men, this means retaining semen and circulating its energy upward. In women, the equivalent is preserving menstrual blood and drawing its essence upward (the "slaying the red dragon" practice). The Deer Exercise is the entry point.

The Golden Elixir

After prolonged circulation and refinement, the three treasures (jing, qi, shen) fuse in the lower dantian into the golden elixir — a condensed, indestructible seed of consciousness. From this elixir, the immortal body is born.

The Immortal Fetus

A second body — pure energy — gestated in the dantian through years of internal alchemy. At death, this body separates from the physical and continues. This is the literal meaning of the Daoist immortal: one whose consciousness has built a vehicle that does not die with the flesh.

The 1–10 Meditation

A guided Taoist meditation for calming the mind and settling into the inner landscape. Simple in form, profound in depth — counting the breath from one to ten anchors awareness in the present moment and opens the doorway to the internal alchemy practices that follow.

The Practice

Sit with a straight spine. Close your eyes. Follow the guided count. On each exhale, a number. If the mind wanders — and it will — return to 1 without judgment. The goal is not perfection. It is the quality of uninterrupted attention. Ten unbroken breaths. Then ten more descending. This is the doorway.

Where to Begin

Start with the Deer Exercise — 5 minutes, daily. It is the body's doorway into the tradition. After a month, add the microcosmic orbit meditation. The Five Animal Frolics can be practiced as a moving qigong set — each animal for 3-5 minutes. Jerry Alan Johnson's books are practitioner-level texts; begin with Chinese Medical Qigong Therapy Vol. 1 for the foundational anatomy of the energetic body.

This tradition is not intellectual. It is accumulated through daily practice over years — the slow, steady refinement that the Daoists called "nourishing life" (yangsheng).

These practices are drawn from the Daoist internal alchemy tradition. They are energy cultivation techniques and are not a substitute for medical treatment. The Deer Exercise involves intimate self-touch — practice privately and within your comfort. The Jerry Alan Johnson texts are referenced from the Energie Curriculum archive.
