About Sacred Therapies

Dr. David Shannahoff-Khalsa's Sacred Therapies: The Kundalini Yoga Meditation Handbook for Mental Health is the definitive clinical reference mapping Kundalini Yoga kriyas and meditations to DSM psychiatric diagnostic categories. Published by W. W. Norton, it presents the seven-part protocol structure that Shannahoff-Khalsa developed through decades of research at The Salk Institute, UCSD, and The Khalsa Foundation for Medical Science.

Each protocol follows the same architecture: Tune In (Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo) → Spine Flexing → Shoulder Shrugs → Ganesha Meditation for Focus → Condition-Specific Technique → Left Nostril Breathing → Sat Kriya or Closing. The specificity is in the condition-targeted technique — the rest of the sequence builds the meditative container within which healing occurs.

The Seven-Part Protocol Architecture

Every condition protocol in Sacred Therapies is built on this framework. The first four techniques establish the meditative state. The fifth targets the specific condition. The sixth balances the nervous system. The seventh seals the practice.

1
Tuning In — Chant "Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo" three times. This calls on the creative infinite consciousness and the divine wisdom within. Establishes the sacred container for practice.
2
Spine Flexing for Vitality — Seated, hands on knees. Inhale flexing spine forward. Exhale rounding back. 1-3 minutes. Opens the spinal column, moves cerebrospinal fluid, activates central channel.
3
Shoulder Shrugs for Vitality — Inhale, shrug shoulders toward ears. Exhale, drop. Rapid, rhythmic. 1-2 minutes. Releases upper body tension, opens cervical spine, prepares for seated meditation.
4
Ganesha Meditation for Focus — Right hand in Ganesha mudra (fingers curled, thumb beside nose). Left hand on knee. Eyes focused at third eye point. Breath of Fire or long deep breathing. 3-11 minutes. Clears obstacles, sharpens mental focus.
5
Condition-Specific Technique — The targeted kriya or meditation. This is where the protocol differentiates: what works for anxiety differs from what works for depression, OCD, PTSD, or bipolar. The engine above selects the correct technique for your condition.
6
Left Nostril Breathing — Close right nostril with thumb. Breathe slowly through left nostril only. 3-11 minutes. Activates the ida nadi (lunar, cooling, parasympathetic). Balances the nervous system after the active work of the specific technique.
7
Sat Kriya or Closing Meditation — Seated, arms overhead, palms together. Chant "Sat" pulling navel in, "Nam" releasing. 3-11 minutes. Then rest in Corpse Pose for 5-15 minutes. Seals the energetic work and integrates the shifts.
These protocols are drawn from Sacred Therapies by David Shannahoff-Khalsa (W. W. Norton, 2011). They are energy cultivation and meditation techniques — not a substitute for professional psychiatric or medical diagnosis, treatment, or medication. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional. Kundalini Yoga practices can be intense — work within your capacity and ideally with a trained instructor.
