Jin Shin Jyutsu &
The Six Healing Sounds

Two ancient traditions. One shared purpose: moving what the nervous system has been holding — through the body, not past it.

Play this frequency as background tone while practicing the holds or sounds below. Your body already knows this frequency. Let it be the container.

Your hands are medicine cabinets.
You carry them everywhere.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a Japanese healing art that works with the body's energy pathways through gentle finger holds. Each finger corresponds to an organ system, an element, and a family of emotions. You hold gently — no pressure — and breathe. That's it. The body does the rest.

Each hold is a conversation with a specific energy pathway. You hold the finger in the opposite hand, wrapping gently around it. Hold for 2–5 minutes per finger, or longer if you feel a subtle pulsing — that's the energy moving. You can do all five in sequence (15–20 minutes) or hold just the one that speaks to today's weather.

☽

Thumb

The Worry Holder

Earth Element · Stomach & Spleen

Transforming: worry, overthinking, anxiety loops, the mind that won't stop solving

Wrap your opposite hand around your thumb. Hold gently — no grip, just contact. Breathe slowly into your belly. Feel the weight of the thinking begin to settle toward the earth. Five minutes minimum. The stomach is the center of digestion — not just food, but every experience you've been asked to metabolize.

"I do not have to resolve everything tonight. The earth is beneath me. I can put this down."

△

Index Finger

The Fear Carrier

Water Element · Kidney & Bladder

Transforming: fear, contraction, paralysis, the freeze that comes before flight, ancestral terror

Hold your index finger in the opposite hand. The kidney carries ancestral fear — the fear that was learned before you were born. Breathe into your lower back as you hold. Imagine the breath moving into the lumbar, into the sacrum, into the soles of your feet. Fear lives in the kidney. Safety arrives through the breath.

"I am safe in this body, in this breath, in this moment. What I inherited, I can metabolize."

◎

Middle Finger

The Anger Archive

Wood Element · Liver & Gallbladder

Transforming: anger, frustration, resentment, the energy that has nowhere to go, bitterness

Hold your middle finger. The liver is the body's alchemist — it processes toxins, including emotional ones. Anger that has no pathway becomes resentment that lives in the liver. Breathe into the right side of your ribcage as you hold. Feel whether there's heat there. You're not suppressing the anger — you're giving it a pathway to move.

"My anger is not the enemy. It is information. I metabolize it into clarity."

♡

Ring Finger

The Grief Gate

Metal Element · Lung & Large Intestine

Transforming: grief, sadness, the weight of loss, things you never got to say, letting go

Hold your ring finger. The lungs hold grief — every breath is a small act of release. The large intestine is the body's capacity to let go of what is no longer useful. As you hold, breathe fully into your upper chest, your collarbones, your throat. On the exhale, consciously release. You are not required to carry everything you've ever lost.

"I am allowed to grieve. And I am allowed to let go. Both are true at once."

✦

Little Finger

The Heart's Door

Fire Element · Heart & Small Intestine

Transforming: pretending, self-abandonment, the fawn response, excessive effort to maintain connection

Hold your little finger. The heart is the sovereign of the body — and the small intestine is the seat of discernment, sorting what is nourishing from what is not. If you have been giving from depletion, this hold is your signal to return. Breathe into the center of your chest. Feel the warmth there. That warmth belongs to you first.

"My heart is not a tool of others' comfort. It is mine to tend first. From fullness, I give."

Complete JSJ sequence — 20 minutes

  • Begin with three slow breaths — belly, chest, release
  • Hold thumb (worry/earth) — 3 minutes, breathe into the belly
  • Hold index finger (fear/water) — 3 minutes, breathe into the lower back
  • Hold middle finger (anger/wood) — 3 minutes, breathe into the right ribs
  • Hold ring finger (grief/metal) — 3 minutes, breathe into the upper chest
  • Hold little finger (heart/fire) — 3 minutes, breathe into the sternum
  • Close with both hands on the lower belly — 2 minutes of stillness

Sound is not metaphor here.
It is physiology.

The Six Healing Sounds (六字訣, Liù Zì Jué) are a Taoist Qi Gong practice over 2,000 years old. Each sound creates specific vibrational patterns in the corresponding organ, moving stagnant qi and clearing the emotional residue that accumulates there. The sounds are exhaled — not sung loudly, but breathed with intention.

Make each sound on a slow, complete exhale. The body posture is loose and natural. Before each sound, take a full breath in through the nose, allowing the organ to fill with fresh qi. Then exhale the sound — slowly, completely, feeling it vibrate from the inside out. You can do the full sequence (15–20 minutes) or work with a single sound that corresponds to what you are metabolizing today.

Liver · Spring

SHHHHH

Wood Element · Green · Anger → Kindness

Releases: anger, frustration, resentment, toxic decision-making, blocked creativity

Sit or stand loosely. Inhale deeply through the nose. As you exhale, make the SHHHHH sound slowly — like air escaping a tire, not a shush. Place your hands over your right ribcage (liver position) if it helps you feel the vibration. Repeat 3–6 times. The liver processes not just alcohol and toxins — it processes every experience you've had to digest under pressure.

"I release what I have been holding in the liver. Anger has done its work. I metabolize it into vision."

Heart · Summer

HAWWWW

Fire Element · Red · Anxiety → Joy

Releases: anxiety, restlessness, scattered attention, disconnection from self and others

Place both hands lightly on your chest. Inhale. On the exhale, open your mouth wide and let out the HAWWWW sound — like a warm sigh with a subtle hawk sound at the beginning. Feel it vibrate in the center of your chest. The heart is the sovereign of the body. When anxiety lives here, everything else loses its anchor. This sound returns the sovereign to the throne.

"I return to my own heart. It is the home I have been looking for everywhere else."

Spleen · Late Summer

WHOOO

Earth Element · Yellow · Worry → Trust

Releases: worry loops, overthinking, excessive sympathy that depletes, the mind that cannot rest

Place your hands over your upper abdomen (stomach and spleen, just below the sternum). Inhale slowly. On the exhale, make the WHOOO sound — from deep in the belly, like a gentle owl call. Feel the upper abdomen vibrate. The spleen governs thought and transformation of nourishment — including ideas. When you worry, you are digesting experiences that haven't been metabolized yet. This sound helps complete the process.

"My mind does not need to solve everything to be safe. I trust the process of my own digestion."

Lung · Autumn

SSSSSS

Metal Element · White · Grief → Courage

Releases: grief, sadness, attachment to what is over, the weight of things held in the upper chest

Place your hands over your upper chest, just below the collarbones. Inhale fully, letting the chest rise. On the exhale, make the SSSSSS sound — a slow hiss, like air leaving slowly. Feel the vibration in the upper chest and throat. The lungs hold grief the way the trees hold their leaves until autumn — there is a rightness to the release when it comes. This sound gives grief a pathway out.

"I am allowed to release what I have been carrying. Letting go is not the same as forgetting."

Kidney · Winter

CHWAY

Water Element · Blue-Black · Fear → Wisdom

Releases: fear, contraction, the freeze response, ancestral patterns, exhaustion at the root level

Place your hands on your lower back (kidney position, just above the pelvis). Inhale. On the exhale, make the CHWAY sound — like blowing out through rounded lips with a slight "way" at the end. Feel it resonate in the lower back and sacrum. The kidney stores ancestral qi — it is the deepest reservoir of life energy. When fear depletes it, the whole system contracts. This sound invites expansion from the deepest root.

"I am not just this moment's fear. I carry the strength of every ancestor who survived what seemed unsurvivable."

Triple Warmer · All Seasons

HEEE

Fire Element (Minister) · Integration · Chaos → Equilibrium

Releases: systemic dysregulation, overwhelm, the exhaustion of holding everything together, integration fatigue

Place both palms on your lower belly, one over the other. Inhale into the hands. On the exhale, make the HEEE sound — a soft, high-pitched exhale, like a gentle hee. This sound works on the Triple Warmer — the meridian that governs the three energy centers of the body and their communication with each other. When you are over-activated, dysregulated, or simply running on empty, this sound invites all three centers to speak to each other again.

"All of me is allowed to be here at once. I do not have to manage my own wholeness. I am already whole."
